Better Business Expert is run by Nigel Moore and his daughter Becki Jones. Between them: 35 years of advising businesses from start-ups to major corporates, and more than ten years of recruiting the people those businesses depend on.
Over 17 years as an independent adviser, Nigel has honed one way of working. He takes proven academic models of strategy and management and makes them relevant and practical for owner-run SMEs. Then he holds the client’s hand while the change is made, rather than leaving a report behind. That approach has delivered significant increases in profitability for his clients.
He works with ambitious, high-growth SMEs to grow profit and shareholder value, develop the senior management team, and prepare the business for exit. He has taken owners through successful company sales, vendor-initiated and management buy-outs (VIMBOs and MBOs), and EMI share schemes, so that the people who build the value share in it. On each of these he works alongside a trusted team of professionals, from tax advisers to solicitors.
He builds long-term partnerships rather than one-off projects. Some clients have worked with him for fifteen years, because he keeps adding value and is treated as a trusted adviser, not a supplier.
His current work with AI and process improvement keeps him — and BBE — at the leading edge of how small businesses can work better.
He has run his own consultancy, NJM Solutions, since 2009 and co-founded Better Business Expert in 2011. His approach is the one BBE is built on — agree a vision and objectives that are specific, measurable and time-bound, then build the road map from where the business is now to where it wants to be.
Nigel wrote BBE’s library of Top Ten Tips guides — more than 100 step-by-step guides for owners — and the Insights articles drawn from them, on cash flow, profit, KPIs, selling, recruiting, retaining staff and managing your own time.
The work behind the method covers:
Becki has more than ten years of recruiting and placing senior professionals in accountancy and finance, HR and marketing. She began her career in luxury beauty retail, with YSL Beauté and as a business manager for Bare Escentuals, before moving into recruitment in 2013 as an executive recruiter in marketing and sales at Emmerson Kitney. At EK Financial Recruitment she rose from Senior Consultant to Principal Consultant, leading a successful team and working with leading SMEs and PLCs.
In 2022 she founded Westmoore Recruitment to treat recruitment as a consultancy rather than a transaction. Westmoore partners with some of the fastest-growing businesses in the Humber region, finding permanent and interim talent through a five-stage process built to save clients time and make sure they hire the right person.
At BBE she is a director and runs the recruitment side of the business, bringing that experience to the clients who need to hire well and keep the people who carry the business.
Most owners can’t justify a consultant at £300 an hour every time they need to think clearly about the business. BBE puts the same method into tools an owner and their team can use themselves: score the business across six steps, build a three-year plan from your own figures, and work through the steps in order, with one action plan at the end.
The software is new. The method behind it is not — it comes from decades of sitting with owners and working out what actually moves their business.
Start with the free diagnostic. It scores all six steps, shows how you compare with businesses like yours, and tells you where to start. No card, no trial clock.
